Identity is who you really are, not who you think you should be: how you are wired, what you believe, the story only you can tell and the way only you build. It is the first of the five must-haves in Brand on Fire because every website, funnel and piece of content is only as powerful as the identity it is built from.
This is the first post in a series on the five must-haves from my signature talk, Brand on Fire: Identity, Authority, Platform, Visibility and Movement. They build in order, from the inside out. Identity comes first, and I'd argue it is the one most people skip.
The noise and the borrowed playbook
There is so much noise online. Messages from every direction telling us to follow this playbook or that one, as if one strategy is a guarantee. I know it well, because I lived it. When I first leaned into building my personal brand, I borrowed every piece of my setup from coaches and leaders who seemed to be doing well. I figured if I followed their playbook, success would be inevitable.
It seems obvious now, but it wasn't to me then. Every one of those playbooks worked for another person, based on who they uniquely are: their personality, their audience, their resources, their timing in the market. It worked because they built it. That doesn't mean it will work for you.
Building from “should”
Most of us build our brands and businesses from a place of should instead of from who we really are. I should be posting this. I should sell it that way. I should sound like her, or like him. That is exactly why building a personal brand can feel so confusing and so exhausting. You're running someone else's operating instructions on your own wiring.
The tell is usually energy. Work that is aligned with who you are takes effort, but it gives some of that energy back. Work built on should drains you, and it shows. The content sounds like everyone else's. The offer is hard to explain. And you can't keep it up, because there is no version of you inside it to sustain it.
What changes when you build from who you are
I believe each of us is wired to build in our own way. When you lean into that, building the way only you can build, you become magnetic. Your brand, your presence and your self are felt. You start attracting the people you're meant to work with. You step into your X factor and become your own category of one.
A category of one is not a gimmick or a clever niche. It's what happens when the outside of your brand finally matches the inside: the look, the words, the offers and the way you sell all sound like the same person, because they come from the same person.
How to start finding yours
Identity isn't something you invent in a branding exercise. It's something you uncover, and then have the courage to build on. A few honest questions help:
- What do people already come to you for, without being asked?
- Which parts of your work give you energy, and which ones only drain it?
- Where have you copied a playbook that never really fit?
- What part of your story have you been leaving out because it didn't match what everyone else was doing?
I believe in identity as the foundation so strongly that every Firestarter client engagement begins with our Authority Map assessment. It draws on the BANK® methodology (created by Cheri Tree) and the RHETI Enneagram to decode how you are uniquely wired to build, lead and sell, so the strategy is built around you rather than around someone else's results.
Everything else is only as powerful as the identity it's built from.
Your website, your funnel, your content and your offers all come after this. Get identity right and they get easier, because you're no longer performing a brand. You're expressing one. Next in the series is Authority: how expertise becomes trust and credibility, built in the arena.
